A Message to Families

Hi! My name is Yoko, and I’m from Japan.

I have worked with children in both Japan and the U.S. through after-school programs, children’s facilities, babysitting, nursery school work, and my experience as an Au Pair.

One of my most valuable experiences was spending about two years in the U.S. as an Au Pair, living with and supporting two different families. Because of this, I understand that childcare is not only about looking after children. It is also about understanding each family’s routines, values, parenting style, and the kind of support they need in everyday life.

My Experience
About 10 years of overall childcare experience
About 7.5 years working with children at after-school programs and children’s facilities in Japan
About 4 years of babysitting and in-home childcare experience
including about 2 years as an Au Pair with two families in the U.S.
Currently working at a nursery school in Japan
Experience caring for children from around 4 months old to 12 years old
Experience working with international and multicultural families
Experience communicating with English-speaking parents

During my time as an Au Pair, I supported children with many parts of their everyday lives, including school and activity transportation, meal preparation, bath time, bedtime routines, homework, and outings.

I also enjoyed planning activities and experiences such as going to parks, beaches, zoos, and aquariums, as well as doing arts and crafts, cooking, baking, and picnics together.

I especially enjoy giving children opportunities to learn through real experiences — seeing, touching, making, exploring, and trying new things.

Safety is always one of my highest priorities.

I pay attention not only to physical safety, but also to a child’s health, mood, energy level, and surroundings. If I notice something unusual or I am unsure about something, I believe it is important to communicate with the parents rather than making assumptions on my own.

What I Value in Childcare

I do not believe that the same childcare approach works for every child.

Even children of the same age can have very different personalities, interests, preferences, and ways of feeling comfortable.

That is why I like to first take time to understand:

What is important to your family?
What does your child enjoy?
When does your child feel most comfortable and confident?

By spending time together, I try to understand each child as an individual and adjust my support to their personality and needs.

Working with children in both Japan and the U.S. has also taught me that every family has different values and parenting styles.

I do not believe there is only one “right” way to raise a child. I respect each family’s approach and try to use my experience in a way that works best for that family and child.

Supporting Your Child in Japan

As a Japanese person, I can also help international families and children enjoy and understand life in Japan.

For example, I can introduce children to:

Japanese language
Seasonal traditions and events
Local parks and children’s facilities
Japanese culture and everyday life
Homework and Japanese study

I like to include these naturally through play, outings, and everyday activities rather than making everything feel like a lesson.

I hope I can help your child enjoy their time in Japan, discover new interests, and create experiences that they can look back on positively in the future.
